Bad ground, voltage drops, short circuit and open circuit: how these small issues masquerade as major failures

There are failures that look like expensive electronics but end at a ground point, relay or a wire with resistance. That is exactly why bad ground, voltage drops, short circuits and open circuits are so costly: they very easily mimic a damaged controller, pump, fan, sensor or comfort module. If someone points the finger too quickly, they usually shoot at the effect, not the cause.

Why can a small resistance on a ground or wire look like a major failure?

Because car electronics are very sensitive to power quality. If voltage drops under load or the ground has too much resistance, the module behaves illogically. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it logs secondary faults, and sometimes it simply disappears from the network.

From the driver's perspective, it looks like a controller failure. From the diagnostician's perspective, you first need to check whether the module has what it needs to operate.

Fan, pump, relay, fuse: where do such problems surface most quickly?

Most often exactly where a component has a simple, unambiguous reaction. The fan does not start on command, the pump builds pressure sometimes and sometimes not, the relay clicks but there is no sensible voltage at the output. These are classic places where electrics mimic a dead part.

That is why a well-planned active test must be immediately paired with the circuit: power, ground, fuse and relay. For this we use the PowerScan PS100 probe, which allows checking a fuse in-circuit (without removing it), locating a short without blowing more fuses, and powering a component directly from the probe to separate a dead element from a circuit problem.

When a circuit has resistance, the whole fault story starts to look like a module failure

The most costly cases are those where a good part receives bad power and is condemned to replacement for someone else's sins.

Short circuit or open circuit: how to know they are not the same type of problem?

An open circuit means a lack of continuity, while a short circuit means an incorrect connection where there should not be one. Symptoms for the driver may be similar, but for the diagnostician these are two different stories and two different ways of finding the cause.

Then there are intermediate cases: a large voltage drop, contact resistance, moisture in a connector, or a ground that only "holds" without load.

Jeśli diagnoza jest szybsza niż pomiar, zwykle jest też za droga.

An open circuit means a lack of continuity, while a short circuit means an incorrect connection where there should not be one. Symptoms for the driver may be similar, but for the diagnostician these are two different stories and two different ways of finding the cause.

When does a power supply problem start to look like a communication fault between controllers?

Very often. A controller with poor ground or power can disappear from the network only under certain conditions. Then another module logs a communication fault, and the whole story looks like a CAN or Gateway problem.

That is why it is worth also reading the material on CAN, DoIP and Gateway communication faults, because in practice both layers very often overlap.

Decision: when is a quick circuit check enough, and when do you need to go into full 12V and controller diagnostics?

If the symptom concerns a specific component and can be forced quickly, sometimes a well-set circuit test with the PS100 probe is enough: ground verification, DC voltage measurement (up to 70V), in-circuit fuse test or component activation directly from the probe. However, if the car loses several systems at once, behaves unstably after parking or triggers faults in different modules, that is a sign you need to go deeper.

In that case, a sensible path is either 12V diagnostics and power stability, or BMW diagnostics with IBS and 12V energy if the symptom lies in that brand, or general diagnostics of combustion ECUs and circuits.

FAQ: bad ground, voltage drops and circuits

What symptoms does a bad ground cause in a car?+

Random errors from several systems at once, unstable operation of a fan, pump or module, strange electronics resets, dimming loads and load-dependent symptoms.

Can a voltage drop mimic a damaged controller?+

Yes. A controller that receives too low voltage or has a poor ground can behave as if it were damaged, even though the problem lies elsewhere.

What is an open circuit in workshop practice?+

It is a situation where current has no continuous path to flow. The cause can be a broken wire, corroded pin, blown fuse or an unseated connector.

Does a short circuit always blow a fuse immediately?+

No. There are partial short circuits, overloads and situations where the system operates unstably but does not end with a classic blown fuse right away.

When does such a problem involve 12V in a hybrid or EV?+

Very often. A poor ground, unstable 12V or a waking module can generate messages that the driver mistakenly associates with the HV battery or an expensive controller.
