The IBS in BMW monitors voltage (normal at rest >12.4 V), current (parasitic draw after 30 min should drop below 50 mA), and battery temperature. After replacing the battery (typically AGM 80–90 Ah), registration in ISTA is required — without it, the energy management system works on incorrect assumptions. If the data is unstable or the system sees continuous wake-ups, the car starts limiting functions and sending messages to the driver.
A voltage drop below 11.8 V triggers a cascade of restrictions: Valvetronic loses full control, transmission adaptations are frozen, and comfort functions shut down in stages. Cost of battery replacement with registration: 600–1200 PLN. In practice, without this part of diagnostics, you can replace a good battery and the problem will still return because its source lies in current draw or the fact that the car never enters proper sleep.
